The long term aim of the textile group is to rebuild the local economy of textile production in Stroud. Most clothing is currently produced from materials which use vast amounts of chemicals in the growing or processing of them. The workers often endure long hours in appalling conditions and the finished items are then transported thousands of miles. To make matters worse the majority of it is discarded long before it is worn out. This system helps no-one but the big businesses and is very bad for the environment. The immediate aim of the textile group is to encourage people to think differently about what they buy and to encourage them to be creative. We need to educate about fair trade and the importance of organic materials and natural dyes. Things have to change and we are starting in small ways. | |||||||
