Faced with challenges of climate change, an unstable political world and the tension of living within an increasingly stressed world, it's good to have space to reflect and explore feelings about all this. Joanna Macy’s work over many years has shown this workshop process strengthens people in their choices and resolve about how they live their life or do their work.

Active hope is about the kind of hope you need to carry on, when you do not have certainty about how things will be in the future for you and the next generation.

An opportunity will be made available to discuss the interest in the group meeting regularly

Fiona trained with Joanna Macey in the 1990s and recently again with Chris Johnstone , co authors of “Active hope” and “Great turning time”, and in her professional work is a facilitator and training consultant working with groups for over 30 years. She has lived in Stroud for 20 years.

Permaculture – What’s it all about?

    Tutor: Seb Buckton

    Cost: £5

     3171304_orig

What is 'permaculture'?.  If this is a question you've asked, or if permaculture is something you've heard of, but want to know a bit more about, this workshop is for you. Permaculture is about using observations of the natural world to help design efficient and sustainable human systems. The aim of this workshop is to demystify the term, and uncover the fact that many people are permaculturalists without even knowing it.

The next Permaculture Design Course in Stroud (12 weeks / one evening a week) will start in the autumn.  There is a two day Introduction to Permaculture on the weekend of the 28th/29th March at Days Cottage

Seb has been practicing permaculture for 4 years and is a Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design apprentice. He teaches permaculture in and around Stroud.

As part of Stroud Film Festival (13th-29th March), Transition Stroud is screening the powerful feature-length documentary

     Manufactured Landscapes

Events in these series are free - but a donation of £3-5 from those who can afford it will enable us to cover costs and support local Transition projects.

This 90 minute documentary directed by Jennifer Blachwal follows the renowned artist Edward Burtynsky as he makes large-scale photographs in China. Epic and beautiful shots of quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines and dams allow us to mediate on the profound impact of human societies on the planet.

You are welcome to attend and contribute to the next monthly meeting of the Transition Stroud Council, the co-ordinating body for Transition Stroud.

For the first half of the meeting, we will have Richard Erskine giving his highly thought-of talk on “Demystifying Global Warming” (let us know you plan to attend and help us publicise the Transition Stroud meeting on Facebook).

The talk provides a guide to global warming in plain English while not trivialising the subject, to make this complex topic accessible to a general audience. It avoids technical terms & jargon and polarising or emotive language. The goal is to give those who attend the talk a basic foundation on which to continue their own personal exploration of this important subject. It provides a ‘golden thread’ through the key points that someone new to the subject needs to grasp.

The second part of the meeting will be our monthly meeting with the focus mainly on the Sustainability Project. There is the option of leaving after the talk.

A workshop with Dirk Slater - founder of FabRiders, a consultancy which focuses on utilising data and technologies, and developing strong organisations and networks, all in service of improving the effectiveness of social change efforts.

Dirk has more than two decades experience working with activists and advocates in over thirty countries on a variety of social change issues including: the empowerment of marginalised communities, defending the right to freedom of expression, and improving governmental transparency and accountability.

We hope this will be a good opportunity for local people involved in campaigning to strengthen their strategies and compare notes in order to build solidarity. Places are limited - you must book a place to attend the Effective Campaigning Workshop.

Help us publicise the event using the Facebook page for the Effective Campaigning Workshop.

The event is one of two day-long workshops from 11am-4pm to close our film and discussion series for 2015/16. This workshop is followed by one given by Climate Outreach on Sunday 15th May, and we hope people will be able to attend both events.

We close our 2015-16 film and discussion series with a workshop on communicating climate change from Climate Outreach

The workshop will look at the best ways to engage people from a variety of backgrounds on the issues connected to climate change - avoiding pitfalls that can make campaigning off-putting or dis-empowering.

Here's a really nice 5 minute video about Climate Outreach's work. Last year, they were behind an excellent workshop we organised that was delivered by George Marshall - who features in this video. We hope this years event will be of use to even more people.

Lunch will be provided. Entry is free, but donations to help us cover costs and to contribute to Transition Stroud's work are very welcome.

Let us know you plan to attend and help us publicise the Communicating Climate Change event on Facebook.

We hope people will attend both this and the preceding event from FabRiders on April 17th as a pair of workshops.

This workshop will introduce the ideas, philosophies and practicalities of a town Share Shop. It will give an overview of research completed in 2016 by the Stroud Share Shop working group and practical advice and steps for setting up, opening and running a share space in the Stroud District. We hope the workshop will be inspiring and demonstrate how achievable this could be with the right time, energy and space.

The workshop will be run by Sarah Warden, Ella Hoskin and Vanessa Hedley who all attended a Frome Share Shop workshop in 2016 and were members of the now obsolete working committee.
